Sustainable wear – fair trade clothing from Esprit
Fair trade clothing for women is a growing trend. It is not a fad, but an attitude. Conscientious use of resources and social responsibility are part of our style. Because it's not only wearing our casual styles that give you a good feeling but also our emphasis on carefully selected, environmentally friendly materials. For this reason, we use recycled fabrics such as polyester and cotton, sustainable fibres such as Tencel™ and organically grown cotton for many of our clothing items. In our online shop, you will find under “I am sustainable” fair trade jeans, pullovers, jackets and other eco fashion. Let yourself be inspired by our sustainable fashion – your favourite piece is already waiting for you.
Eco looks good on you!
If you think that eco clothing has nothing to do with fashion, we'll convince you otherwise. Our fair trade fashion for women is a chic thing. Just like “vegan” or “sustainable”, eco has become a premium feature, not just for food but also for clothing. It has little to do with the look of the clothes. You can't tell with the naked eye which parka or blouse from our collections are made of sustainable materials and which are not. We have fair trade clothing in all categories, from basic t-shirts or long-sleeved shirts to sweaters, jackets, dresses and trousers to underwear.
That is why fair trade clothing is important to us
The standard methods of producing clothing use more resources than will be available in the long term. We want to change that. In the case of sustainable fashion, fairness itself is also in the foreground. This affects several areas:
- Sustainable products are fair to the environment: when producing organic clothing, care is taken to use renewable raw materials or, alternatively, fibres made from recycled materials. To conserve resources and avoid further environmental pollution. In addition, the manufacturing processes used are generally more environmentally friendly. For example, care is taken to use as little water as possible.
- Being fair means taking social responsibility: fair trade fashion means being made fairly in the first place. This is particularly important because it appreciates the people who make the clothes. This is reflected in working conditions: for example, certain standards such as breaks and working hours are observed in the workplace, the employees are not exposed to toxic substances and they are paid appropriately.
- Eco fashion gives you a good feeling: what is good for the environment is of course also good for you. Your skin will also feel that the materials we use for our fair trade clothing contain little or no contaminants. Garments feel gentler because fair trade clothing is generally more skin-friendly. A good feeling when wearing Esprit fashion has taken on a double meaning.
Organic cotton: an important contribution to sustainable clothing
The use of organic cotton for fair trade fashion is an important contribution to environmental protection. Organic cotton is grown organically, which means that no pesticides are used. Pest control is carried out by other plants that are simply placed between the cotton plants. This means that mixed culture is also used instead of mono culture – this helps the soil to regenerate.
Our eco fashion made from organic cotton is certified according to OCS (Organic Cotton Standard) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). For you, this means that clothing with the organic seal of approval at Esprit contains at least 20% organic cotton.
Recycled: eco fashion made from recycled materials
It is our goal to increasingly use recycled materials for our fair trade fashion. This includes recycled synthetic fibres as well as recycled cotton. If you see the recycled label on our garments, you can be sure that at least 20% recycled fibres have been used. This is what the Recycled Claim Standard and Global Recycling Standard require. And we do too.
Made from good wood: cellulose fibres
The raw material for fibres such as viscose, modal and lyocell is wood, a renewable material. We work with the non-profit environmental organization CanopyStyle to ensure that wood from endangered forests is not used.
Caring for your fair trade organic fashion properly
For our I am sustainable products, we recommend that you follow the care instructions on the washing label. As with all other items of clothing, the rule of thumb for eco clothing is that washing less frequently is always better for the lifespan of the fibres. Airing is often enough. When you do wash your clothes, low temperatures are ideal.
Progressively focusing on sustainability
The use of organic cotton and recycled or environmentally friendly fibres is just the beginning for us. Already, 29% of the materials we use are from sustainable sources for our fair trade women's clothing. Our goal is to increase that to 100% in the shortest possible time. But fair trade fashion also means establishing fair production processes. We also want to make sure that clothing has a longer life – by recycling more and offering up-cycling. For us, that is also what makes ecological clothing fair.
