A fine thing – Esprit men’s suits
A well-fitting suit belongs in every man’s wardrobe: perfect for the office and at social occasions. When casually styled, it also cuts a fine figure in your leisure time. Though very much a standard classic of men's fashion, men's suits are versatile. Discover fashionable cuts, elegant materials and hip colours in our online shop.
Jacket and trousers: these are the essential pieces in a man's suit
A man’s suit always consists of at least a jacket and trousers. A waistcoat turns the two-piece into a three-piece suit. It is not always included but is part of the general tone on some occasions.
The jacket
You can choose a single-breasted jacket with one, two or three buttons. These single-breasted jackets are the most popular jackets for men. Besides the single-breasted jackets there are double-breasted jackets, which are not only distinguished by the number and type of buttons but also by a wide lapel. Your perfect jacket:
- Always reaches over your backside; in fashionably shorter designs, it rests about 5 cm lower than the sleeves.
- Lets you move freely, does not stick out and does not crease.
- Has shoulder seams that end in line with your shoulders.
- Has sleeves that reach to the base of the thumb, the cuff protruding around 1 cm.
- Has a lapel that fits flat against the neck.
The trousers
The suit jacket is completed with the suit trousers. Classic with pleat, for a loose fit on the hips and waist. Modern suit trousers are cut narrower and omit the pleat.
- Fit: the trousers sit on the waist, one pleat must not open;
- Length: when you are standing, the hem should rest slightly on the shoes without touching the heel. If socks are visible when you walk, then the suit trousers are too short.
- Pockets: to prevent bulging, do not place a large wallet or a keyring in your trouser pockets.
The waistcoat as a chic accessory
It enhances your suit for the occasion. If the waistcoat is not sold with the suit, you can always buy it separately. Make sure that it complements the colour of the suit jacket and trousers, preferably as a contrast.
It fits: the perfect fit
A man's suit fits perfectly when it stands out, or simply because it fits you so well. Men's suits are available in different fits. The most important fits in brief:
- Comfort fit: classic cut. Straight fit.
- Regular fit: classic cut. Somewhat straight and only slightly tapered.
- Slim fit: youthful and modern. Close-fitting jacket and tightly-cut trousers.
- Extra slim fit: very slim shoulder area, figure-accentuating tapering.
Just like tailor-made: mix and match
Do your clothing sizes differ for jacket and trousers? The practical mix + match system allows you to combine two different sizes and still find the perfect suit.
How to style your suit
You have found your suit. The question remains as to what you should wear with it. What is the right shirt, which shoes and what about the belt? Our tips will help you.
The matching shirt
A shirt in regular fit or slim fit is ideal. It fits close to the body and does not crease under the jacket. Choose the colour according to the occasion. Classic collar shapes like shark or Kent are always suitable. There should be a finger's breadth of space between shirt collar and neck.
The right shoes
Lace-up shoes made of leather are the right footwear for your suit. If the suit is blue, wear brown or black shoes. But: ʻNo brown after sixʼ. If your suit is black or grey, choose black shoes. If a casual look is allowed or even required, you can combine trainers with a man's suit.
Tie, belt, cufflinks
You may already know about shoes and belts: they must be of the same colour. Cufflinks add an elegant touch to the sleeve. The tie is a fashion accessory and the choice of style can be more daring. It is slightly longer than the waistband, the tie knot is oriented to the shirt collar. The bow tie is a must for tuxedos and tailcoats, and a bold alternative to a standard tie.
What suit for what occasion?
Unsurprisingly, it depends on the occasion. This defines the colour and material, as well as the cut of a man's suit. There are a few general rules.
Business look: the suits you wear for business
Dark colours are on the agenda here – black, anthracite, dark blue. In summer light grey or brown is also suitable. The shirt is white or light blue, with a subtle tie. The uncomplicated two-button jacket is popular for office and leisure. When the situation is more formal, the double-breasted suit becomes the preferred choice.
Festive dress code: various options
Weddings: If the dress code is not specified, a dark suit combined with coloured shirts in pastel shades will be just right. Adapt to the circumstances: in summer, a light linen suit looks good. At a garden party it may be somewhat more relaxed than in a ballroom.
Looking good when relaxing: men's suits for casual occasions
On informal occasions, your suit may be patterned and the tie can stay at home. A slim fit suit makes your look casual, especially if you wear a cool T-shirt or a pullover with it. Tip: combine the suit jacket with jeans or chinos and trainers.
The fabric that men's suits are made of
Men’s suits are mainly made of fine new wool and cotton. Wool is pleasantly warm in winter and looks elegant. On warmer days breathable cotton refreshes, whereas linen cools. Especially high-quality and elegant suits are made of silk.
